This is the online directory with the main English schools in Switzerland that offer an Education in English. Most are private schools, or even exclusive "Finishing Schools". The programmes they offer vary from the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) programme, which includes PYP, MYP and Diploma to the British GCSE and GCE examination systems. English Schools are required to satisfy the requirements of the Swiss national system. The American Schools in Switzerland run courses to prepare students for the SATs.
The International Baccalaureate Organizations Diploma Programme was created in 1968. It is a demanding pre-university course of study that leads to examinations. It is designed for highly motivated secondary school students aged 16 to 19. The programme has earned a reputation for rigorous assessment, giving IB diploma holders access to the worlds leading universities. The Diploma Programmes grading system is criterion-referenced, which means that each students performance is measured against well-defined levels of achievement. These are consistent from one examination session to the next and are applied equally to all schools. The IBO has shown, over the course of 30 years, that students are well prepared for university work. They are accepted by universities in more than 110 countries.
The cantonal universities and federal institutes of technology provide most
higher education in Switzerland. French is the language of instruction
in the Universities of Geneva, Lausanne and Neuchatel; German in the Universities
of Basel, Bern, Zurich and Hochschule St. Gallen. The University of Fribourg
is bilingual, French/German.
The universities of Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne and Neuchatel and St.
Gallen all accept IB Diploma holders provided that students have a minimum
of 30 points and the usual distribution of 3 higher level and 3 standard
level subjects in the six areas of the hexagon. The University of Fribourg
requires entrance examinations whereas the University of Zurich requires
certain scores depending on the faculty to be entered. Students should
contact the faculty in question for information. Applications should be
made direct to the university of the candidate's choice.
