The International School of Berne is a non-profit, parent-owned day
school accredited by ECIS and NEASC, serving diplomatic, academic and
business families in the Berne area. It provides an English-language
education for children of 36 nationalities.
The academic programme is international in nature. The school aims
to foster an appreciation and understanding of diverse cultures and
to promote open communication, open-mindedness, fairness, and respect
for the particular backgrounds of its students. Curricula are designed
to enable pupils below the 12th grade to transfer to other, similar
international schools or to home-country schools. ESL, French, German,
PE, art, drama, music and contacts with Swiss culture are part of the
curriculum.
Preparation for external exams begins in Grade 8. The Secondary School
division prepares students for university entry and assists those bound
for other tertiary systems insofar as facilities permit. IB, IGCSE,
PSAT and SAT examinations are offered. A full range of academic and
non-academic courses is available (including skiing/skating, a yearly
field week and Model United Nations). Additionally, a Learning Support
Unit caters for children with learning disabilities and those with special
gifts or talents.
The annual calendar extends from August until June on a three-term
basis with major holidays at Christmas and Easter.
Physical facilities are located on a 1½-acre site five km from
Berne. Four modern, well equipped buildings house two libraries, a gymnasium,
two art rooms, science labs, a computer lab, and classrooms, complemented
by a playground and a small sports field. The Early Learning Centre
is located in a nearby chalet.
Admission is open to all children who are within the age range. Intermediate
ability in English is required at upper levels.
