Founded in 1889, the Institut auf dem Rosenberg, is an international, co-educational school with boarding and day students. The four sections of the school (Anglo-American, German, Swiss and Italian), have altogether about 400 students who follow the curriculum of the respective country. Students in the Anglo-American Section, representing 30 nationalities, follow either a college-preparatory program leading to an American High School Diploma or prepare for British 'O' and 'A' level examinations. Additional classes in English, as well as an EFL program, are provided for students whose English is not up to standard. Approximately 90% of graduates attend four-year universities in North America, Europe or elsewhere. Teachers are qualified as having a BA, MA or equivalent credentials. The academic year is divided into three trimesters between early September and late June. Supervised excursions and sports activities, including, winter ski-trips, are organized regularly. Various extra-curricular activity programs are available to all students, but participation is mandatory for students aged 16 and under. Summer language courses are offered in July and August in Switzerland, Austria and England. Situated in the hills above St Gallen, the Institut has a scenic view of the city below and the Alps to the south-west and of Lake Constance to the north. The school grounds, covering 25 acres, have twelve buildings encompassing administration, housing, dining hall, classrooms, laboratories, libraries, tennis courts, a soccer field and other sports areas. Applicants for admission must submit copies of previous academic records and a personal recommendation from the head of their last school. A personal interview is desirable.
