Zurich International School
Founded in 2001 through the merger of the American International School of
Zurich (established in 1963) and the International Primary School of Zurich
(established in 1971), ZIS is the only independent school in Zurich offering
an internationally accredited, comprehensive educational program spanning
grades Pre-School through 12. ZIS is accredited by both the Council of International
Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Over 900
students from ages 3-18 representing over 45 nationalities attend ZIS at one
of the schools four campuses. The ZIS Early Childhood and Lower School
curricula are based on the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate
(IB) Organisation. Special programs in ESL (English as a Second Language)
are offered to non-native speakers in Grades 1-5 to assimilate them a quickly
and smoothly as possible into the classroom. A counselor and learning support
teachers are available to assist children with special educational needs.
In the Upper School, ZIS offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
Programme, as well as a standard college-preparatory course of studies with
a strong Advanced Placement (AP) emphasis. Academic offerings include lab
science courses at all levels, independent study options, and a full program
in the visual and performing arts. The ZIS Middle School program provides
students in Grades 6-8 with a smooth transition from the PYP in the Lower
School to the academic programs in the Upper School. Small class sizes (maximum
of 20 students per class at the Lower School and 16 students per class in
the Middle and Upper Schools) allow teachers to individualize instruction
and closely monitor student progress. Students from Pre-K through Grade 9
study German, and all students are exposed to various elements of Swiss culture.
Technology is integrated throughout the ZIS curriculum, and all students receive
hands-on computer training. In addition to academic programs, ZIS offers its
students a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs,
performing arts classes, and crafts. School is in session from late August
to mid-June. Admission is based upon an evaluation of records from the student's
previous school and, whenever possible, a personal interview.
